So... who was John Muir?
John Muir lived from 21 April 1838 to 24 December 1914. Of Scottish origin he was a noted US naturalist, explorer, writer, and geologist: and he was an environmentalist decades before anyone would really have recognised the description.  John Muir is quoted as saying

"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe."

Patrick Michael Karnahan a member of The Black Irish Band wrote the song because of his love for the writings of John Muir. At the age of 11 Patrick read the "Mountains of California" and wanted to live out his life in the mountains.

This song with the words & music can be found on the Sierra Clubs official John Muir web-site. It is one of the few songs written about Muir.
